In Country Mode

Guys, I like Country Music. For some people country might be annoying and perhaps cheesy, 

but I think it's because they haven't given that genre a chance. 

Recently, I compiled many of my favorite country songs into one CD 

so that I can listen to it when I'm in Peru and remember Texas. I have lost count on 

the number of times I've listened to this cd in my car already. 

I'm telling you, it's genious! haha, joking, but you might actually like it! 

If you're already a country fan, then I am almost sure you'll like my little compilation 

(as I have old and new)! 

If you don't like country, then I think you should click below and listen to 

some of the songs; maybe start with number two... such cool beat.

Week Goals Update// One Night of Queen

Hi lovely people!

Remember my goals from Monday? Let's review them together and see the results...

- write back to at least two people whom I owe e-mails to:  Yes! I have; I wrote back to more than 3 people. I am not the best e-mail responder so this felt good.


- not get back into bed with the alarm clock (my cell phone) in my hands:  Partly fulfilled. It has been cold these last mornings so I wanted to get back in bed immediately... but I did manage to stay awake and get out shortly after.

- read more pages from my current book: You bet! I've read more... I'm reading The Lovely Bones.


- ignore the guy that passes everyday with his extremely loud motorcycle in front of my office: hmmmm I haven't heard him lately... just once. I did get a little annoy still.

 - go to the gym: Ok, failed. But I have excuses again!! Had to meet a friend on Monday, went back home late on Tuesday, and yesterday was One Night of Queen!!!

I had a lot of fun, guys. I told my friend we needed to pretend we were back in the 70s/80s and going to a real Queen concert. We might have been two of the few people in the mezzanine who sang to the top of their lungs yesterday and screamed all night long, but we were told that we were 'inspiring' by a couple sitting near us. The One Night of Queen tribute is performed by Gary Mullen & The Works. You know what? If there is one person in this planet who can move, talk, walk, act, and sing very similar to Freddie, it's him. Unbelievable... he must have watched millions of Queen's concerts and documentaries because I heard/saw many things I remember having watched before... he could probably be in a Queen movie. From were our seats were--not to close not too far-- I decided to go back in time and pretended the real Freddie was on stage. Anyway, before you decide to stop following me because I talk too much about Queen, I'll leave you with some pictures of me and my friend preparing for the concert:

A Tribute

Dear Enjoyers, today I'm in Queen-mode (see bottom right of sidebar). 18 years ago my favorite singer, Freddie Mercury, passed away. So today I want to share a song that the band wrote to honor him. It's a beautiful song, one of my favorites, and I think you'll like it too. I  want to dedicate this to all of our dear loved ones who have left us too soon. My uncle also died in November: Nov.28 of 2001. He was one of the first people to show me songs from Queen, so this goes to him, to Freddie, and to all those angels we miss:

When your English is not perfect...

I love this song!

Long before I discovered the use of google lyrics search, and before coming to Texas, I was a teenager in Lima, Peru. It was there where I realized my favorite type of music came from the 80s. And one of the songs that allowed me to discover that, was Down Under from Men at Work. One thing, when you speak a language other than English, is that you tend to like songs for their rhythms and notes rather than the lyrics. You also tend to sing whatever the words sound like as opposed to what the song is really saying. Anyway, of course I now know how to sing Down Under better and what they're saying, but I actually didn't have it 100% accurate until now. After listening to it like 3 times yesterday in my car, I decided to look at the lyrics... here's a few things about the song I just learned today (not only in terms of the correct word but also the real meaning): 

- I did not know Australia was known as "the land down under" 

- "where women glow and men plunder" to plunder means 'to take by force or wrongfully'

- "where beer does flow and men chunder"  chunder is slang for throwing up, yuc! I like that better than the v word though.

- some lyric translations*: 

Fried out Kombi - a broken-down van. The lyrics are often translated as "Combie," but the correct spelling is Kombi. It came from the VW Kombivan which was very popular in the '60s and early '70s, especially with surfers and hippies. --> I actually knew what a 'combie' was because we have them all over in Lima!

Head full of Zombie - Zombie was a particularly strong batch of marijuana which was floating around Australia for a long time. People called it "Zombie Grass." --> Absolutely no idea! I just imagined a bunch of zombies on a trail... 

- I did not know a Vegemite sandwich looked so...        yucky: 

- In the original video {not the one above}, the guy who stands up and offers the Vegemite sandwich is the band's drummer, Jerry Speiser. He wasn't really "6 foot 4 and full of muscles," he had to stand on something to get extra height. He also wore a wig.--> I actually like to imagine him somewhat like this:

- I thought land down under was referring to a happy place where everything was perfect... 

- I would always sing : I said to the man, "Are you trying to touch me?" as opposed to I said to the man, "Are you trying to tempt me?" 

- I would always sing "where women blow and men plunder" as opposed to "where women glow and men plunder." It sounded a bit strange indeed...

Isn't it funny when you discover you've been singing the incorrect lyrics for years? And isn't cool when you learn that a song has a deeper meaning than what it seems?

Queen Greatest Hits Contest

As I have written before; I am a fan of Queen. There is a contest started by the Queen Group on Facebook, and I am going to participate because 1) I had already thought about writing more about my favorite Queen songs 2) I can now do it with a chance of winning something!

So here is my list [I must acknowledge there are Queen songs I have not heard yet, so this list could change one day]

- Killer Queen

Killer Queen is on my list because it's one of the songs aside from the popular Bohemian Rhapsody, and We Are The Champions, that made me like Queen and be more interested in the band. I love the style, the tempo, the lyrics, and the highs and lows of the voices, especially in the part "she's a killer, queeeeeeeen..."The chorus has original descriptions of a person: "gunpowder gelatin, dynamite with a laser beam." This is also a song that makes me visualize Freddie's playful personality. Plus it always makes me wonder who inspired it.

- Good Old-fashioned Lover Boy

Again, a song with great rhythm and playfulness. What I like about this song as well, is that it is very honest. I don't recall any other songs that have given me a glimpse of a singer's private life more than this one. Freddie is not afraid to sing about this; and I love that.

- I Want To Break Free

I cannot listen to this song without imagining the video and laughing at the image in my head of Freddie and the vacuum cleaner. Again Freddie is not afraid of doing what he feels like doing! Polemic arose in the US because of the video, or so I read, but I find it very funny. That's one reason, but aside of that, I love the song for what it is! It's one of those pieces that make me raise the volume in my car, lower the windows, feel the air... and feel free! My favorite part is the middle, only instrumental, a lot of guitar. Love it!

- The Show Must Go On

When I feel sad or something, this song reminds me of strength. The lyrics are powerful, but behind it all is the knowledge that Freddie did this with not much strength left. That whole album...

When I am reminded of the horrible things that happen in this world, I hear this song too. What are we living/looking for? Another hero, another mindless crime...

Additionally, this song contains one, if not my favorite, Queen phrase "my soul is painted like the wings of butterflies, fairy tales of yesterday will grow but never die, I can fly my friends!" I try to live happily, and to keep my inner child always alive, so I love this phrase.

- Crazy Little Thing Called Love

Here is a song that always makes me dance, or if I'm in my car, move around however I can. I love the simplicity of the lyrics, yet the powerful message behind... how crazy and complicated love is. I love the style of the song, because I think it's unique within Queen's large collection... reminds me of Elvis, whom I also like!

Here is an artist that I recently discovered: Richard Hawley. He has this lovely song called Serious that talks about being in love and how silly we can act when we feel that way! You need to watch the cute video of it!

For those of you who love Queen!- Part I

Wow... what a band. Don't all of you wish Freddie was still alive so that he could continue inspiring us with his voice? It's not common for me to brag about things I like too much. I know everyone likes different things, etc. I also know there are so many awesome artists out there that one should appreciate. And I do, but I still miss Freddie! After I watch how he captures the crowd during his concerts, there is nothing that I would die to attend nowadays more than a Queen concert. What is your favorite Queen song? When do you hear it? For instance, I love listening to "I'm Going Slightly Mad" when I am stuck in traffic. Even though it has nothing to do with the song, I go slightly mad if I sit in the car too long. I love listening to "I Want to Break Free" when I am going back home from the gym and the speed limit is 60 and there are not too many cars around. I lower my windows, raise the volume, and stick my hand out to feel the air. The middle of the song with Brian's guitar and the instrumental part afterward is my favorite! :)
